Get active and reduce emissions in the LEN

Monday 11th June 2018

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is encouraging residents in Greenwich West and Peninsula to cycle, walk and use public transport more to support the Low Emission Neighbourhood (LEN) as National Bike Week gets underway.

A low emission neighbourhood is an area-based scheme which focuses on reducing emissions and promoting more sustainable travel and living. It is focused on areas of high pollution which can be reduced through local measures.

The Royal Greenwich LEN is one of five throughout London.

The others are Westminster, Marylebone; Hackney, Islington and Tower Hamlets, the City of London and Redbridge, and Newham

The Greenwich Society and East Greenwich Residents Association assessed the levels of 22 locations within the Royal Greenwich LEN and found that all readings taken along the main roads were above the legal limits. With the current air pollution in London responsible for nearly 10,000 early deaths, it's important to tackle air pollution now.

But the LEN is not just beneficial for reducing air pollution,  it can also be beneficial for your fitness too! Walking and cycling more don't just reduce emissions emitted by vehicles, they’realso great ways to get fit and stay active.

What can you do to reduce emissions?

Drive less

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is arranging a car free day to encourage those in the LEN  to not use their cars  – this is taking place on the 24th June.
