Greenwich Invitational gets Young People active over summer

The Greenwich Invitational, the annual summer football tournament for 10-19 years olds in the borough, ended with a bang as the team Prize Hunters emerged victorious.

The 8 strong team of 16-19 year olds won the tournament final held at Samuel Montagu Youth Centre in Kidbrooke last Friday, 2nd September. It is the second year in a row they’ve won the competition, edging out their opponents Young Finessers to walk away with the cup and either a PlayStation 4 or £250 Bluewater vouchers each.

This was the 9th year the tournament has been held, with over 400 young people taking part over August.

Speaking at the final, Matt Horne, Youth Service partnerships manager at Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) and architect of the competition said:

“It’s been a great tournament again this year with some great football played. I am very grateful to all CACT staff, sponsors and most importantly, the players who made it possible.”

This year, the Greenwich Invitational was sponsored by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Canary Wharf Construction.

Furthermore, the tournament partnered with CACT’s ‘Street Violence Ruins Lives’ initiative and the Rob Knox foundation to spread an anti-weapons and violence message amongst participants.

The final was attended by Neville Lawrence, father of Stephen Lawrence, Clive Driscoll, who headed the second Lawrence enquiry and Sally Knox, mother of murdered actor, Rob Knox.

Speaking at the event, Sally Knox said:

“I’ve come down here to support all the good work CACT do on the estates and see the results of so many kids coming to the football tournament.”
