Premier League extends Primary Stars funding

Monday 24th July 2017

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has received funding to work with schools in the Royal Borough of Greenwich for an additional two years as part of the Premier League Primary Stars scheme.

CACT is a year into the project, an education programme which connects learning to the world of sport.

The £80,000 grant will also cover recruitment of a Primary Stars Officer and online resources to boost PE provision and help primary school teachers develop their skills and those of their students.

CACT will be working with 10 institutions per year in total, including five target schools. As well as sport, teaching materials also cover subjects like Maths and English, with reading and creative writing challenges complementing football tournaments. Additionally, Primary Stars encourages children to build life skills.

The initiative aims to support 10,000 primary schools across England and Wales by 2019, working with kids between five and 11 years old. It is available to every primary school.

Sean Daly, CACT’s Head of Football and Sports Development, said:

“We’re delighted to receive the funding to continue our successful Primary Stars programme for a further two years.

“The scheme has helped thousands of children across the Borough in a range of curriculum areas over the past year, and we look forward to continuing to use the power of football to help teachers deliver quality education. We would like to thank the Premier League for their ongoing support for our participation.”

CACT will begin delivering the sessions again at the start of the new school year in September.
