Volunteer as a Greenwich Get Walking Leader and support people in your local community

Thursday 9th August 2018

Greenwich Get Walking is part of Walking for Health, which is England's largest network of health walk schemes that supports people to lead healthier lifestyles.

Who is Walking for Health?

Walking for Health is part of the Ramblers, and is supported by the postcode lottery and Macmillan Cancer Support. There are over 8,000 volunteer walk leaders who support 375 walking for health schemes across England.

What is a health walk?

Health walks are free, short walks over easy terrain that are designed for people who are inactive or suffering from a long term health condition. The walks act as a way to increase fitness levels, or to keep active when fitness levels decline due to age or illness, but ultimately the walks are open to all!

How can you get involved as a volunteer?

We're looking for volunteers to help run health walks in Greenwich.

Take part in Greenwich Get Walking's free walk leader training on 21 September and join the team. We're looking for front, middle and back markers.

By the end of the one day course you will:

  • understand what walking for health is about
  • understand the benefits of walking and physical activity
  • get to know the role of the Walk Leader
  • Receive information on mental health and learning disabilities
  • Have access to follow up support and resources to help make the most of your skills, including a volunteer Walk Leader manual.
  • be confident to lead a Health Walk in due course (following guidance that goes along with the progress card).
  • Have met and shared best practice with other Walk Leaders.

Tea and coffee are provided but you will need to bring lunch .

Wear suitable clothing and footwear as you will be taking part in a short demonstration Health Walk.

For more information or to book your place, please call Greenwich Get Active on 0800 096 5436 or email Ben on ben.cooper-linnett@cact.org.uk
