Young people from Bexley enjoy residential weekend

Thursday 13th September 2018

With support from the London Borough of Bexley, 30 young people from Haberdashers School enjoyed an active weekend away with Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) at Hindleap Warren Outdoor Education Centre in East Sussex.

The three-day residential saw the group take part in a range of outdoor team-building activities, learning to come together and work with one another in order to achieve a goal. The trip, targeted at 12 to 16-year-olds, complements the ongoing work being done as part of CACT’s Early Help & Prevention strand to engage young people.

The young people were picked for the trip by the school for a variety of reasons, including behaviour and attitude. A number were chosen for outstanding work in the previous year. Activities such as tent building, canoeing and braving the ‘leap of faith’ helped the group build their self-esteem and confidence.

Throughout the year, the Haberdashers pupils work with CACT on a range of different themes, including respect, bullying, health and peer pressure as well as taking part in sport sessions.

Kim Dixson, CACT’s London Social Inclusion Co-ordinator, said:

“We had a fantastic weekend away with the 30 young people from Bexley.

“We’ve been working with Haberdashers School for eight months now, so we were really looking forward to taking the group away for the first time.

“Everyone was really well-behaved and they really enjoyed trying out new activities. This will hopefully become a regular trip we can set up once or twice a year.”
